Ten Life Lessons I Learned From Kramer

What can Cosmo Kramer teach us about coping in a world full of dangerous tables, dishonourable greengrocers, and perfume plagiarism?

Society’s guidelines are loose

Kramer is a revolutionary who doesn’t care for the norms of society – in contrast to George who thinks “we live in a society” – yeah right, George. Need to clear a table? Just kick all the stuff off. Push a kid out of the way to get a seat on the subway. If you don’t seize these opportunities when they present themselves, how will you ever secure a gig as a Calvin Klein underwear model?

Self-confidence and how to obtain it

I often think about the time Kramer put mousse in his hair and exclaimed “Have you ever seen a better looking guy?” It’s a mantra for whenever you feel down about your appearance. Personally, I like to erupt into any conversation and yell, have you ever seen a better looking gal?! Try it for yourself.

The power of mystery

The fact that his best friends don’t think he’s a serial killer, but accept that there’s a chance he might be. It’s always good to leave an air of mystery about your character as people find it very intriguing, beguiling almost.

Keeping your hand close to your chest

Similarly to the above point, the reveal of his first name being Cosmo in season six. Seinfeld had been on air for six years before Kramer’s first name was revealed as Cosmo. If you happen to have a unique name, don’t mention it to anybody until you have known them for at least several years – the longer, the better.

Politics are for everybody

It’s okay to spread communist propaganda to children during your time working as a mall Santa.

Snacks are good

There’s no need to worry about snacking, wherever, whenever. For instance, if Kramer hadn’t been eating Junior Mints in the operating theatre that one time, the infection could have killed patient Roy. You must remember to incorporate plenty of fresh fruit into your snacks, so do try your best to be welcomed into the greengrocer’s.

Be in touch with your emotions

It’s okay to be sensitive, as shown by his reaction at being told to drop dead or being called a hipster doofus. Despite his roguish façade, his sensitives are delicate. He is also great at picking presents for his friends, even though they sometimes might not work quite right. It’s the thought that counts.

Think of the environment

Kramer is a big fan of sustainable fashion. His vintage wardrobe evidences this, and the lengths he’ll go to to secure his jacket are inspiring. He even invented the alias Professor van Nostrand from the clinic.

A little bit of what you fancy does you good

Feeling good all the time. Although he was on a stake out as a private detective, that one time he drank a mug of beer whilst simultaneously smoking a cigarette was a display of true hedonism.

Value your relationships with other people

The importance of being honest and patient. Somehow, Kramer tolerates Newman even though he is annoying. He is also very honest about his wants and feelings, and therefore never gets into situations like George having to lie all the time because of his spiralling high jinks.
